Getting Started

TwainImporter Pro is a virtual TWAIN driver for Windows. It presents itself to any TWAIN-compatible application as a scanner source, delivering images from files on disk — no physical scanner required.

Installation

1. Download the installer ZIP from scanworkssoftware.com or use the download button in the navbar.
2. Extract the ZIP to a temporary folder.
3. Run TwainImporterPro_Setup.exe and follow the wizard. Accept the UAC prompt when Windows asks for administrator permission.
4. Restart any scanning applications that were open during installation.

Note: Installation requires administrator privileges. This is required because TWAIN drivers register system-level components.

Important: TwainImporter does not appear in the Start menu

TwainImporter is a TWAIN driver, not a regular desktop application. After installation, you will not see a TwainImporter icon in the Start menu or on the Desktop.

To use TwainImporter:

1. Open your scanning application (ABBYY FineReader, Adobe Acrobat, Kofax, Square 9, etc.).
2. Go to File → Select Source (the exact menu path varies by application).
3. Choose TwainImporter Pro from the list of available sources.
4. Click Scan or Acquire — TwainImporter will open its configuration dialog.

Configuration tabs

The TwainImporter configuration dialog has four tabs:

Folder tab

Configure where TwainImporter looks for files to deliver to the scanning application:

• Folder path: The directory to watch for incoming files.
• Include subfolders: Scan subdirectories recursively.
• Delete after import: Remove files from the folder after they have been delivered.

Image Enhancement tab (Pro edition only)

Apply automatic corrections to incoming images before delivering them:

• Binarize: Convert colour or greyscale images to black-and-white.
• Remove paper colour: Eliminate off-white or yellowed backgrounds.
• Rotate: Auto-rotate pages based on content orientation.

Settings tab

• Kofax VRS emulation: Report to the host application that a Kofax VRS-capable scanner is present.
• Loop mode: Cycle through the folder's files continuously (useful for automated testing).
• Create log file: Enable diagnostic logging (see Troubleshooting).

Registration tab

Enter your license key here after purchase. The key is tied to the machine it was activated on (Developer/OEM: volume licensing available).

First scan walkthrough

1. Place a test file (e.g. test.pdf or sample.tiff) in the folder you configured.
2. Open your scanning application and select TwainImporter Pro as the source.
3. Click Scan. The TwainImporter dialog opens.
4. Click OK or Scan in the dialog.
5. Your application receives the file as if it were scanned from a real device.
